Build It and They Will Come

Frankly, in the case of building your business using the web the above statement simply isn’t true. Very often businesses built a web site or pay to have a web site built and assume that customers will find them. The web is not a phone book; it takes more to get the most from your web investment.

Submitting your site to search engines and getting to the top of search responses also does not maximize your return. You need to drive potential customers to your web site. Once you have them there you need to motivate them to choose your business above your competitors.

These statements are true whether your business is local or international. They are true whether your products and services are designed to be sold and provided via the internet or via your brick and mortar location. You must attract customers to your business. Every business owner is aware there is a cost to get customers to the order page or through the door.

In the not too distant past businesses had to rely on traditional advertising to stimulate business. This advertising is still available and can be very expensive. When I was serving in a director role for a national stereo chain, we clearly understood the cost in advertising dollars for each person who came through our doors. We also understood that we needed a high conversion rate on the prospects that did walk through the door. In other words, we needed motivated buyers. The goal of advertising is to get that motivated customer through the door or two the order page and to have them buy your products or services a high percentage of the time.

The good news is that in the age of the World Wide Web, it can be must cheaper than it used to be to reach these customers and to motivate them to do business with you.  You also have the potential to reach many more people.  For example, you can now motivate vacationers to visit your locally owned store or restaurant prior to them ever leaving home.

Don’t forget, the reach of your web site has now gone far beyond home computers. Most people now carry a computer on their belt or in their purse in the form of a smart phone. Your business now has incredible reach.
